Nagasaki Peace Park

Nagasaki Peace Park, located in Matsuyama-machi, Nagasaki City, was built to commemorate the victims of the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945, and to pray for world peace. The park’s most iconic feature is the Peace Statue, which stands 9.7 meters tall and was created by sculptor Seibo Kitamura. The statue’s right hand points toward the sky, symbolizing the threat of nuclear weapons, while the left hand stretches horizontally, representing world peace. The closed eyes convey a silent prayer for the souls of the victims.

In addition, the Fountain of Peace was built to honor those who died of thirst after the bombing. The fountain, shaped like a dove symbolizing peace, evokes deep emotions. The park also features the Hypocenter Monument, marking the exact point where the atomic bomb exploded. Nearby, remnants of destroyed buildings have been preserved, allowing visitors to witness the devastating impact of war. Adjacent to the park, the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall display relics of the victims and testimonies from survivors, reminding visitors of the importance of cherishing peace.

Every year on August 9th, the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony is held here, attracting people from all over the world who come to offer flowers, observe moments of silence, and pray for a world free of nuclear weapons.
