Asahidake

Located in the heart of Daisetsuzan National Park, Asahidake is the tallest mountain in Hokkaido, standing proudly at 2,291 meters. This active volcano has long been revered as the “Mountain of the Gods” by the indigenous Ainu people. Each season paints a distinct landscape: lingering snow and fresh greenery in spring, hiking and alpine blooms in summer, fiery autumn foliage, and world-class snow sports in winter. Asahidake is one of Japan’s rare natural destinations that can be enjoyed year-round.
One of the most iconic experiences at Asahidake is riding the Asahidake Ropeway, which takes visitors from the base to Sugatami Station at an elevation of around 1,600 meters. In summer, this is the starting point for trails featuring alpine flora and the picturesque Sugatami Pond, which reflects the mountain on clear days — a truly breathtaking sight. In autumn, the area becomes one of the first places in Japan to display vibrant foliage, starting as early as early September, with a dazzling mix of reds and yellows.
In winter, Asahidake becomes a powder snow paradise, beloved by advanced skiers for its untouched backcountry slopes. After a day on the snow, visitors can relax in the Asahidake Onsen area at the foot of the mountain, where sulfur-rich hot springs offer a warm and healing retreat.
The surrounding town of Higashikawa actively promotes eco-tourism, offering guided hiking tours, photography excursions, and various outdoor activities. For travelers passionate about nature, photography, skiing, or escaping the summer heat, Asahidake represents the purest essence of Hokkaido’s wilderness.
