Cool Summer Journey: Exploring the Trio of Japan’s Chubu Highlands
As the summer heat approaches, it’s time to escape the urban hustle and embark on a refreshing alpine getaway. Japan’s Chubu Highlands, with its crisp mountain air, blue skies, and clear lakes, invites you to step into a serene landscape woven by nature. This journey will take you through three perfect summer symphony destinations: Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture, Hakuba Highlands in Nagano Prefecture, and the mysterious Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
First Movement: Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji — Witness the Sunrise Above the Sea of Clouds
At the foot of Mount Fuji, Kawaguchiko greets the morning with mist swirling between the lake’s surface and Japan’s iconic peak, creating a dreamlike scene. It is not only an excellent spot to admire Mount Fuji but also a main gateway for summer climbers.
From July to September each year, Mount Fuji opens for climbing. Many visitors start their ascent at night from the Fifth Station to catch the magnificent “Goraiko” — the sunrise above the sea of clouds. After climbing, you can relax at a lakeside hot spring inn or take the Tenjoyama Ropeway to overlook the lake and mountain scenery, enjoying the unique summer charm.
Second Movement: Hakuba Village — Soar Freely Amid the Alps
Hidden in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, Hakuba Village is a paradise for summer hikers and paragliding enthusiasts. Take the ropeway up to the Happo Pond trailhead, where the crystal-clear alpine pond reflects the majestic Northern Alps. Along the way, wildflowers bloom, as if stepping into a natural art gallery. Thrill-seekers should not miss paragliding from the mountaintop, soaring over lush valleys and tranquil mountain villages. Time seems to stand still as you glide with the wind, experiencing pure freedom in the sky.
Third Movement: Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route — Summer Snow Walls and Secret Highlands
Connecting Nagano and Toyama, the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route reaches up to 3,000 meters and is known as the “Roof of Japan.” This route combines six types of transportation — electric buses, ropeways, mountain trains, and more — to take you through spectacular natural wonders.
Even in midsummer, Murodo Plateau (2,450 meters elevation) still holds snowfields, and alpine flowers compete in bloom. On clear days, the Tateyama mountain range reflects in mountain stream pools. Don’t miss the Daikanbo observation deck, offering unforgettable views of deep valleys and remaining snow walls, showcasing the grandeur of the Alps.
