Jogashima Island

Located at the southernmost tip of Kanagawa Prefecture’s Miura Peninsula, Jogashima is a beloved yet uncrowded island destination close to Tokyo. Though compact at only about 1.8 square kilometers, the island offers dramatic coastal scenery shaped by centuries of wave erosion, the historic Jogashima Lighthouse, peaceful green parks, and striking rock formations — making it a perfect place to enjoy sea breezes and nature’s healing embrace.
Strolling around Jogashima, visitors can walk along rugged cliffside trails overlooking the deep blue waters of Sagami Bay and crashing white waves, while seagulls often soar gracefully overhead. On the island’s eastern side, the expansive green lawns of Jogashima Park are ideal for picnicking and ocean views. At the southern tip, unique rock formations like Eboshi Rock, sculpted by millennia of waves, are a geological wonder popular with photographers. Be sure to visit the Jogashima Lighthouse, built in 1870 — modest in size but one of Japan’s oldest Western-style lighthouses, rich in historical significance.
Whether for a weekend getaway or a refreshing summer afternoon by the sea, Jogashima promises a peaceful retreat surrounded by the ocean.
