Sankeien Garden

Located in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Sankeien Garden is a famous sightseeing spot that beautifully blends traditional Japanese garden aesthetics with historical architecture. This stunning garden was created by businessman Tomitaro Hara (known as Hara Sankei) and opened to the public in 1906. Spanning approximately 17.5 hectares, Sankeien is renowned for its exquisite chisen-kaiyushiki (pond-centered strolling garden) design and a number of historic buildings relocated from across Japan, creating a serene and elegant atmosphere.
Sankeien offers different charms throughout the four seasons: cherry blossoms bloom in spring, lush greenery fills the garden in summer, brilliant autumn foliage colors the landscape in fall, and a peaceful, snow-dusted scene appears in winter. From late March to early April, over 300 cherry trees bloom simultaneously, attracting countless visitors for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). The garden also features several Important Cultural Properties, including the three-story pagoda from Kyoto’s former Tomyoji Temple and the Yokobuean teahouse, allowing visitors to deeply connect with Japan’s rich cultural heritage as they stroll through the grounds.
In addition to enjoying the natural scenery and historical architecture, Sankeien frequently hosts cultural events such as tea ceremonies, ikebana (flower arrangement) exhibitions, and firefly viewing evenings. Visitors can also relax at tea houses inside the garden, savoring matcha and traditional Japanese sweets in a tranquil setting.
Whether you wish to quietly appreciate the beauty of the garden, capture breathtaking photographs, experience Japanese culture, or simply enjoy the harmonious blend of nature and history, Sankeien Garden is an unmissable destination in Yokohama.
