Tsurugaoka Hachimangu

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is a historically significant and widely renowned Shinto shrine located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo during the Kamakura period, it serves as the ancestral shrine of the Minamoto clan and stands as one of the most important and respected shrines in Kamakura.

Perched atop Tsurugaoka Mountain, the shrine’s torii gates, bridges, and main hall create a picturesque landscape akin to a beautiful painting. Strategically positioned, the shrine offers breathtaking panoramic views of Kamakura city and Sagami Bay. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is also famous for the cherry trees lining its approach, drawing crowds of visitors and pilgrims during the spring cherry blossom season.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine can be reached from Kamakura Station either through the busy Komachi-dori shopping street, or along the Dankazura, a pedestrian path in the center of Wakamiya Oji Street that is lined with several hundred cherry trees. Via either route, the walk from Kamakura Station to the shrine takes about 10-15 minutes.
