Kasuga Taisha

Located in the ancient city of Nara, Japan, Kasuga Taisha has been enchanting visitors with its sacred atmosphere and the romantic beauty of countless lanterns since its founding in 768 AD. Dedicated to the ancestral deities of the powerful Fujiwara clan, this historic shrine is not only part of the UNESCO World Heritage but also stands as one of Nara’s most iconic landmarks.
As you stroll slowly along the forest path, you’ll first be greeted by thousands of stone and bronze lanterns, quietly standing guard and whispering stories of a thousand years. During the Mantoro Lantern Festivals, held every February and August, all these lanterns are lit at once, casting a warm, ethereal glow that transforms the shrine into a dreamlike wonderland—attracting countless visitors who come to make wishes and admire the magical scene.
Beyond being a sacred place for prayer, Kasuga Taisha is also celebrated for its picturesque beauty throughout the seasons: cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring, lush green canopies in summer, fiery red maple leaves in autumn, and a serene blanket of snow in winter. Surrounding the shrine is Nara Park, where friendly deer roam freely, offering a peaceful coexistence between humans and nature that leaves a lasting impression.
Whether it’s your first time in Nara or a return visit, Kasuga Taisha always offers a special sense of peace and quiet inspiration.
Next time you visit Nara, slow your pace and step into this ancient shrine to feel the sacredness and beauty woven through the passage of time.
