Kibune Kawadoko at Kifune Shrine

Kibune Kawadoko at Kifune Shrine Located in the mountainous northern area of Kyoto, Kifune Shrine is a historic and serene shrine famous for enshrining the deity of water. Every summer, the Kawadoko (riverside dining platforms) set up by traditional inns and restaurants around the shrine become one of the most iconic summer experiences in Kyoto.

Kawadoko refers to tatami platforms built over a flowing stream, allowing guests to dine beside the murmuring water and enjoy the cool mountain breeze—both a refreshing and elegant way to escape the summer heat. What makes Kibune’s Kawadoko special is that the platforms are set directly above the crystal-clear Kibune River. The cool stream flows right beneath your feet, and the temperature here is typically 5 to 10 degrees Celsius cooler than in central Kyoto, making it one of the most comfortable ways to beat the summer heat.

From early May to late September each year, long-established restaurants and inns in the Kibune area open their Kawadoko seating, offering a variety of dishes ranging from traditional kaiseki cuisine and local specialties to modern fusion courses. Dining amidst the greenery and the soothing sound of flowing water feels like stepping into a dreamlike forest retreat.

In addition, visitors can also take the opportunity to visit Kifune Shrine during the day. The approach to the shrine is lined with dense foliage and iconic red lanterns, creating a tranquil and solemn atmosphere. At dusk, the lanterns are lit, adding a touch of mystery and romance, which is especially popular with couples and photography enthusiasts.
