Maruyama Park

Maruyama Park is located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and is one of the oldest parks in Kyoto. It is renowned for its rich cultural background and beautiful natural scenery throughout the four seasons, especially as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in spring. Established in 1886, the park sits right next to the famous Yasaka Shrine and is conveniently located, making it a popular rest area for both locals and tourists exploring the Gion and Kiyomizu-dera areas.
Maruyama Park offers unique charm in every season. In spring, the cherry blossoms bloom in full glory, especially the weeping cherry tree, which draws thousands of visitors each year for nighttime hanami. In summer, the lush greenery provides a cool, refreshing atmosphere. Autumn brings fiery red foliage for maple leaf viewing. In winter, the tranquil and refined scenery reveals the serene beauty of Kyoto’s seasonal spirit. The park features ponds, artificial hills, small bridges, a strolling garden layout, and many grassy areas perfect for picnics and relaxing walks.
The park’s most iconic landmark is the tall weeping cherry tree, which becomes especially romantic under nighttime illumination during spring. Inside the park, visitors will also find traditional tea houses, Japanese restaurants, and rest areas built in classic architectural styles, perfect for experiencing Kyoto’s gentle pace of life.
