Matsumae Park

Located in Matsumae Town, Hokkaido, Japan, Matsumae Park has developed since the Edo period as the castle town of the Matsumae Domain. Today, it is renowned nationwide for its rich historical heritage and magnificent cherry blossom scenery. As the northernmost castle park in Japan, it is also one of Hokkaido’s most representative cherry blossom viewing destinations, attracting countless visitors each spring to experience the unique beauty of sakura in Japan’s northern region.

Walking slowly along the park’s pathways, visitors are first greeted by the expansive grounds centered around Matsumae Castle. The historic castle stands quietly among the cherry blossom groves, harmonizing beautifully with the surrounding sea of flowers and creating a dignified and tranquil atmosphere steeped in history. The park is home to over 10,000 cherry trees representing more than 250 varieties. With blooming periods that overlap in succession, the cherry blossom season lasts longer than usual, allowing visitors to stroll at a relaxed pace and fully appreciate the scenery of spring.

From late April to mid-May each year, Matsumae Park reaches its most enchanting season. As the weather gradually warms, different cherry blossom varieties bloom one after another, creating one of Hokkaido’s rare extended cherry blossom viewing periods. During this time, the Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival is held, featuring nighttime illuminations, local food stalls, and seasonal events. These festivities extend the enjoyment from daytime flower viewing into the evening, adding a romantic and lively festival atmosphere.

Matsumae Park is not only famous for its cherry blossoms but also offers beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. Visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage in fall, and snow-covered castle views in winter. The surrounding area still preserves the traditional castle town atmosphere, along with historic temple sites that add cultural depth and historical charm to the journey.

Whether it is your first visit to Hokkaido or a continuation of your cherry blossom journey across Japan, Matsumae Park offers a uniquely moving spring experience. When planning your next trip to Hokkaido, consider slowing down and visiting this historic northern garden where history and cherry blossoms coexist, and discover the seasonal beauty that belongs uniquely to Matsumae.
